The Old Year Wanes
Liturgical Use: New Year's Eve

The Old Year Wanes
The old year wanes a new arrives
And with it possibility
To pray forgiveness for our past
And
ask God's blessings yet to be.
Like Job whose life was wrenched
apart
By
forces he'd not comprehend,
He grew to love his Lord and God
Accepting
His harsh reprimand.
Job's friends assumed that he had
sinned
And thus
deserved this consequence.
Suff-'ring was caused - in
their world view -
By God's
determined providence.
God's promise, on the other hand,
Suggested
that Job's harsh estate
Resulted not from simple sin
But came from God
to test his faith.
Job later learned when all else
failed
That God was
all he'd ever need.
His faith in a redeeming Christ:
An
all-sufficient guarantee.
Let not our faith drift far from
God
For Jesus suffered
more than we
To grant us better life on earth
And
heaven for eternity.
